Edward Gero

A veteran of the Washington theatre community since 1983, and a six-time recipient of the Helen Hayes Award among nineteen nominations. Recent work includes the American premiere of Kunene and the King by and with John Kani at STC; The Lehman Trilogy at STC and The Guthrie. He created the role of Antonin Scalia in Molly Smith’s acclaimed Arena Stage production of John Strand’s The Originalist, which toured to Asolo Rep, The Pasadena Playhouse, Court Theatre, and 59E59 Theaters in New York Off-Broadway. He played Mark Rothko in Robert Falls’ production of RED; Richard Nixon in Nixon's Nixon at Roundhouse Theater; Gloucester in Robert Falls’ landmark production of King Lear (with Stacy Keach); Roy Cohn in Janos Szasz’ production of Angels in America: Millenium Approaches at Arena Stage; King Henry in Henry IV at STC; Donny in American Buffalo; Sweeney in Sweeney Todd.  Film and television credits include House of Cards, Turn: Washington’s Spies, Die Hard II, Striking Distance, and narrations for The Discovery Channel and PBS. In 2019, Mr. Gero received the Congressional Gold Medal from the OSS Society for a documentary narration commemorating the 75th Anniversary of D-Day. Named a 2015 Lunt-Fontanne Fellowship recipient, he was inducted into the College of Fellows of the American Theater in 2024, and in 2025 was named Professor Emeritus of Theater at George Mason University.
